The Friday Five

1. What's your favorite crafty activity?

Crochet.

2. What got you into it?

When I was a kid in primary school, a lady came into our classroom to teach us how to crochet and cross stitch. My first efforts were clumsy, but I knew I wanted to continue.

3. What was your favorite arts & crafts project as a kid?

One teacher taught us about cave art; we made a small cave out of cardboard and then on A4 paper we each drew our own cave art which got put up in our 'cave'. That was fun.

4. What has someone made for you?

A little pendant made out of polymer clay representing Glastonbury Tor.

5. Are there any unfinished projects in your life you need to pick back up?

A scarf half knitted.

Well, Happy Midwinter to those of us in the southern hemisphere. It was freezing last night as it went down to 5 deg C / 40 deg F. I'm a summer person and struggle with cold like that. At least the weather is fine - last week it was wild and stormy.

Sunsets (and sunrises too, apparently) have a lot of bright pink in them these days, that's apparently due to the aftereffects of the underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga a while back. I'm old enough to remember years ago after Mt Pinatubo (sp?) erupted in the Phillipines, we had primary-colour sunsets for months afterward.

My local theater in conjunction with others recently had a French Film festival, so I looked at the catalogue and decided to go to 'Murder Party', which was loosely based on the game of Cluedo. There was a reasonable crowd and most of us were masked, so that was good (my city still has thousands of cases each day so I'm always careful when leaving the house). It was entertaining enough and there was a plot twist I didn't see coming, so that was ok.

I recently watched the two seasons of 'Bridgerton' after each other, I had found S1 a bit boring in places but I adored S2.

Library books and tea are keeping me going right now. I go for walks when I can and I have a cross stitch project I'm working on.

I was lucky enough to meet author Mercedes Lackey and her artist husband Larry Dixon at a convention years ago. They were at the auction event and Larry started quietly drawing on an art pad. Towards the end of the auction, he showed he had completed an amazing pencil drawing of Vanyel in that short time, and he was donating it to the auction.

The room went wild and there was an amazing (and expensive) bidding war. You couldn't help but wish it was yours (no, I didn't get it).

In your own space, tell us who you would recast in a film, tv series or webseries, or maybe someone voicing a cartoon or videogame. Or who would you cast to play a character in a book, comic or maybe even your own fiction!

Hmm, I was watching a movie on TV the other day that had Zac Efron in it, and I thought, 'hmm, he could play Luke Skywalker in yet another Star Wars TV show I would happily watch.'

I recently reblogged some art by Shaun Keenan on my Tumblr, it's that of an alternate earth where dinosaurs co-exist with people (not Dinotopia, but similar if you like that). Amazing and funny too.

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

Well, last year I finally finished a WIP of mine, the SS/HG story 'A Choice of Roads'. I started it eons ago and then along the line I got chronic fatigue so updates became few and far between.  Then last year I thought it would be nice to post it to A03 but then I thought, 'only if I finish it first!'. So that became the impetus I needed to wrap the story up finally. :)

Spare a thought for poor Tonga right now... yesterday an underwater volcano called Hunga-Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in the Tongan kingdom erupted and caused a tsunami. There was a sonic boom that was apparently heard here in NZ too.

People here were warned to avoid beaches for a while, especially in the North Island. Wave surges did reach us, unfortunately and destroyed boats and part of a marina up north. A group of fishermen doing some midnight fishing had to run for their lives after water suddenly withdrew from the bay. Probably not surprisingly, a group of wild horses in the area had just before panicked and run away.

I thought things were exciting enough with the remnants of Cyclone Cody coming down to New Zealand. It was originally going to visit my neck of the woods but it has veered east and will probably hit the East Cape. They do need rain in that area but hopefully it won't be a deluge.

It's the middle of summer right now and it's around 30 deg C / 90 deg F - perfect beach weather - but we have to avoid beaches thanks to a tsunami and a cyclone. I'm ok with heat, I'm wearing a bamboo t-shirt right now that keeps you cool in summer because of the way it breathes.

Challenge # 3

In your own space, put some favourite characters in an AU, fuse some favourite canons together, talk about your favourite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren't your cup of tea.

My favourite trope is canon-divergent AU's and that's what most of my fan fiction on A03 is; my current fandom is Lucifer (TV) and I've written a few of these for it. I like it because you can change a detail in canon and then end up with a whole new story that can turn out bad or good.

I'm not into writing fusions, they take a skill I don't really have, really. I admire people who can do it and one of my favourites is 'like once in a life'  which is a Lucifer (TV) / Pacific Rim fusion. Chloe Decker gets an unusual partner in her efforts to fight off the invading aliens. Because even he doesn't like the aliens, either.

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Well, I've got a WIP I'll try to write more of. A small book fandom I'm part of needs more fanfic, so that's a goal for me.

I'm also a landscape artist so I'll try and do more art that I'll put on my Redbubble store.

It's New Year's Eve (how did that happen?) so I hope the f-list have a New Year that's better than the last. The weather has been fine but with chilly winds recently, so I'm wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt today.

Christmas was a quiet one spent with family. People gave me chocolate as gifts, I'm happy with that.

I've stopped watching The Expanse unfortunately; season 4 wasn't really holding my interest and then (more) body horror started happening. I might re-watch some season 3 episodes of Babylon 5, the woman who is doing v-logs of her first watch of the show on Youtube is getting more visibly excited as she gets into that season at the moment. It's always worth a re-watch anyway.

I was able to watch on TV recently a newish three-part adaption of 'A Christmas Carol' starring Guy Pierce as a younger, but still nasty Scrooge. Andy Serkis did a good job as the Ghost of Christmas Past who's determined to make Scrooge look at himself in the mirror, so to speak. It got a bit dark in places but I kept on watching, which is praise from me.

It's time for the Snowflake Challenge again in January and I'll take part; it will be a welcome antidote to what's going on out in the world right now.

Well, Auckland has progressed to a Level 3 lockdown, which is the same as Level 4 but now you can get takeaways! But don't be like the guy who tried to smuggle money and a car boot full of KFC across the regional border. You can just imagine the conversation:

Drug Lord: I want some of the good stuff!
Underling: Contraband, boss?
Drug Lord: No, KFC, you fool! I've had a month with no takeaways!
Underling: Ok, boss.

Bookstores are open which means you can order books online and get it couriered, so I ordered a Victorian-era novel about a dictionary being put together and the words that were being left out (hint: they're connected to women's lives in some way). It didn't take long to arrive and it's nice to read an actual new book again (I have e-books but they're not the same).

I binge watched the final season of Lucifer but while I like the actual final ending, I didn't like some of the pot holes and plot holes the show took to get there. OK, they were working in a pandemic so you have to give them some leeway, but still, I ended up writing some fix-it fan fiction to make me feel better.

The weather has been wild the last few days but today was nice and I went for a walk.

imhilien: New Zealand (New Zealand)
Well, Auckland is still in a strict lockdown for the next fortnight (at least?), but the rest of the country is in a more relaxed lockdown. This means you can get takeaways now... and apparently there have been long queues outside some takeaway places.

[Entertains fond daydream where I go to the regions border and send off some drones to fetch pizza for me. Yes, I miss pizza, how did you guess?]

There was a big thunderstorm on Monday afternoon and I think the house shook a bit at one point. It rained through the night and caused flooding in West Auckland. The weather is more peaceful today and I went for a walk around the block.
imhilien: New Zealand (New Zealand)
So yesterday started off straight forward. I went to a monthly meeting of the Handweavers Guild (I used to be the secretary there) where someone gave a talk with photos about going to a weaving camp down at Turangi, next to Lake Taupo. Some beautiful photos of the lake and of the weaving examples shown, some of it really great. Then in the afternoon I had to go to the dentist for a routine clean and check (nothing bad found so that was good).

Afterwards I went to a cafe to calm down after Dentist fun, where I found out that Auckland and nearby Coromandel region was to go into a level 4 Covid lockdown from midnight for a week, because of community cases found, possibly the dangerous Delta variant. Level 4 is the strictest lockdown where you all stay home and only places like the supermarkets and pharmacy are open. Exercise is permitted as long as you don't go too far from your neighbourhood. So with mask on I headed to some shops to get last minute stuffs.

I also decided to treat myself to some books and went and bought the next two books in the 'Shadow and Bone' trilogy after having seen the first season / book on Netflix. Ben Barnes, gosh, you've turned into Hot Evil guy though I remember you as so dashing and earnest in that Prince Caspian movie some years ago. I didn't have many library books at home but for reasons I couldn't go to a library yesterday.

Today it was revealed it is the Delta variant traced back to New South Wales in Australia, where they're struggling to deal with covid, poor chaps. I think they had 400 new cases in a day just recently. We don't want that here.

July means winter Down Under and recently it has been cold. Last week I think it was, it dropped down to 2 c / 34 F one night and that was a bit horrible for me despite all the layers on my bed. I couldn't cope with colder temperatures than that. If it snows, don't go has been my life long motto.

My work has been busy as it's school holidays. In the gift shop they have I've got one of my landscape paintings up for sale. I also have some greeting cards with my art on for sale as well; I've sold two cards so far so that's great.

I feel sorry for Australia at the moment; New South Wales is having trouble with a bad Covid outbreak and Sydney has been in lockdown.

I've got book club on Sunday; the subject is books or authors beginning with 'C'. I might bring along 'Cold Comfort Farm' which is always good for a chuckle, as well as 'Chalice' by Robin McKinley which is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast; the heroine has honey-based magic.

My laptop's hard drive broke down a little while ago and it needed a complete replacement. I lost some files unfortunately because I hadn't backed them up, urgh. Of course this happened just before season 5b (5b!) of 'Lucifer' came out on Netflix so I had to wait a week before my laptop came back before I could watch the episodes. It started off a bit slow and then really got going. When he's not going through angst and anguish, Lucifer gives the impression he's actually a golden retriever in disguise who loves his Detective. Aww. I wrote some fanfic after the season final which is up on A03.

There is an English woman on YouTube doing vlogs of Babylon 5 and is getting quite excited as she's working her way through season 2. Heh heh.

The Friday Five

1) What is the best book you've read?

'Beauty' by Robin McKinley. A lovely re-telling of 'Beauty and the Beast and the way the author wrote was great.

2) What is the worst book you've read?

I forget the title, but it was a historical novel about a working class woman who wanted a Nice Thing and was punished for it, because she didn't Know Her Place or something horrible like that. Ugh.

3) What is a favourite book from childhood?

'The Ordinary Princess' by M.M. Kaye. A re-telling of 'Sleeping Beauty' but she is cursed with being ordinary instead and loses the beauty she was born with. This turns out to be a good thing in the long run.

4) What is a favourite book from adulthood?

'Intervention' by Julian May. Rogi is the black sheep of his powerful, Kennedy-esque French-Canadian family because he prefers to own a sci-fi / fantasy bookshop (with cat, of course). Sometimes the unlikely person is the hero. Set in an alternate America where telepaths start being born in the general population after WW2.

5) What is a book you've read a number of times?

'Sleeper's Castle' by Barbara Erskine. It's the perfect winter read. In Middle Ages Wales, a female musician keeps house for her surly father. She starts seeing a strange woman... is she a ghost? In the modern era, a woman is house-sitting for a friend in Wales when she sees a strange woman... is she a ghost? Then the two eras start merging in the ancient house, which has secrets of its own...

When a rocket goes up into space, various sections break off and fall back to earth. So I was watching current affairs last night and they mentioned that a section of a Chinese rocket is falling back to earth - but due to some miscalculations, it could possibly land in Wellington, New Zealand's capital, this weekend or early next week. My reaction: WUT. I have friends in Wellington. Peter Jackson lives there!

I wonder if it was meant to land in the Pacific ocean to the east of New Zealand - apparently, there's a rocket graveyard there. What's left of the space station Mir is said to be down there, and if that doesn't sound like the start of a horror movie, I don't know what does. Fingers crossed we'll be alright. The chap narrating this for the show had nervous eyes. I wonder what he knew that we don't. Maybe I'm just speculating.

I recently received a fantasy book I'd ordered online - 'Jolene' by Mercedes Lackey (part of her Elemental Masters series). I had bought the e-book version but I liked it so much I wanted the physical paperback. Ironically, ordering from a Australian bookstore meant that it would get to me quicker than if I ordered it online from a New Zealand place (as far as I could tell). I remember when Borders used to be in town (remember that store?) and they had the full collection of Mercedes' books. I miss those days.
