Well, Happy Midwinter to those of us in the southern hemisphere. It was freezing last night as it went down to 5 deg C / 40 deg F. I'm a summer person and struggle with cold like that. At least the weather is fine - last week it was wild and stormy.

Sunsets (and sunrises too, apparently) have a lot of bright pink in them these days, that's apparently due to the aftereffects of the underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga a while back. I'm old enough to remember years ago after Mt Pinatubo (sp?) erupted in the Phillipines, we had primary-colour sunsets for months afterward.

My local theater in conjunction with others recently had a French Film festival, so I looked at the catalogue and decided to go to 'Murder Party', which was loosely based on the game of Cluedo. There was a reasonable crowd and most of us were masked, so that was good (my city still has thousands of cases each day so I'm always careful when leaving the house). It was entertaining enough and there was a plot twist I didn't see coming, so that was ok.

I recently watched the two seasons of 'Bridgerton' after each other, I had found S1 a bit boring in places but I adored S2.

Library books and tea are keeping me going right now. I go for walks when I can and I have a cross stitch project I'm working on.

July means winter Down Under and recently it has been cold. Last week I think it was, it dropped down to 2 c / 34 F one night and that was a bit horrible for me despite all the layers on my bed. I couldn't cope with colder temperatures than that. If it snows, don't go has been my life long motto.

My work has been busy as it's school holidays. In the gift shop they have I've got one of my landscape paintings up for sale. I also have some greeting cards with my art on for sale as well; I've sold two cards so far so that's great.

I feel sorry for Australia at the moment; New South Wales is having trouble with a bad Covid outbreak and Sydney has been in lockdown.

I've got book club on Sunday; the subject is books or authors beginning with 'C'. I might bring along 'Cold Comfort Farm' which is always good for a chuckle, as well as 'Chalice' by Robin McKinley which is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast; the heroine has honey-based magic.

My laptop's hard drive broke down a little while ago and it needed a complete replacement. I lost some files unfortunately because I hadn't backed them up, urgh. Of course this happened just before season 5b (5b!) of 'Lucifer' came out on Netflix so I had to wait a week before my laptop came back before I could watch the episodes. It started off a bit slow and then really got going. When he's not going through angst and anguish, Lucifer gives the impression he's actually a golden retriever in disguise who loves his Detective. Aww. I wrote some fanfic after the season final which is up on A03.

There is an English woman on YouTube doing vlogs of Babylon 5 and is getting quite excited as she's working her way through season 2. Heh heh.

Babylon 5: Season 2 - YouTube

There is a cold south-wester outside at the moment so am staying indoors as much as possible.

So last week Auckland was under a Level 3 Covid lockdown again; which meant stay inside and avoid people outside of your household bubble as much as you could. One of my coping mechanisms was uh, binge-watching 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' which was actually quite good. Nice blend of fantasy and sci-fi. Coping mostly achieved!

Then on Friday, the North Island had two tsunami alerts because of two big earthquakes off the coast. People where I were received warnings to stay away from the water. Nothing too alarming happened though, up in Northland it was reported that the tide was doing the opposite of what it should be doing, but that was really all.

We're back down to a kinder Level 2 lockdown where you can leave your house, but be sensible, etc.

However, signs of autumn are now starting to appear. There's always something!

Well, I've got a new part time admin job that I started last month. It's only a volunteer role, sadly, but it could lead to something more in the future. Anyway, it's honest work that can go on my CV. It's at a place where I help out at reception and with their gift shop, so I'm learning How to Retail. There's an automatic door near where I sit, which is good as this keeps air circulating.

In regards to COVID, New Zealand is at Level One, which means wear a mask on public transport and planes. There were some community cases of COVID in the CBD a few weeks ago, so I've been avoiding it ever since for now. That's a shame, as it has shops and a park I like.

It's the start of summer and my seasonal allergies have been bad lately, which I'm taking stuff for. The weather must think it's spring again as we've been having howling winds and surprise rainstorms - probably a good thing as we've been under water restrictions for most of the year after last summer's drought. It's supposed to be a wettish summer which will probably also be a good thing, so any days of sunshine will be a bonus, I suppose.

In October I took part in 'Snapetober 2020' on Tumblr which featured daily prompts you could write / produce art for. I wrote a few short stories which I've posted at my A03 account.

Well, although New Zealand has mostly squished Covid-19, there was a bit of a scare recently when two people were let into the country on compassionate grounds from abroad going down south and it turns out they were infected and hadn't been tested properly. That was an anxiety episode I didn't need that day. Testing at the border has been tightened up apparently and that's where any new cases are picked up these days (they then have to go into quarantine).

I still wear a face mask if I'm going on public transport for a decent length of time and try and keep some distance from people. My book club has started up again, so that's good. Art group is back on, though they clean the place to the nth degree at the moment and make sure hand sanitizer is on each table, which is OK. My board gaming group has started up again, though I haven't been back yet as it's at night with not much ventilation, lots of strangers etc, so I'm still a bit cautious about returning.

I went to the movie 'The Booksellers' the other day with a friend, which was good. It was about the rare book scene in New York (pre-Covid, of course). Was good to see a few book shops came with resident cat. :)

It's definitely winter here now, when I wake in the morning and it's below 5 degrees (40 F) I Do Not Like. About a week ago there were tornadoes in our region that sent a few trampolines flying here and there, ouch.

Still hunting for a new part-time admin job, a process made much harder of course now in these interesting times. Still, some of the job web sites are starting to list jobs again.

Season 5 (part 1) of 'Lucifer' is turning up in August, yay. I do want to see new adventures of my Chaotic Dumba** babies. Two new seconds of S5 footage were made available and the fandom went crazy, LOL.

Here are some fic recs set in the mid-90's when Windows 95 was released (I remember!). However, this version is an Eldritch Horror that wants to be Your Only Friend.

1. Welcome to Windows 95!
Done entirely in realistic (and creepy) screenshots.

It's been a nice spring day but the weather promises to turn nasty again tomorrow. *sigh*

My BPAL perfume 'Sister Mary Loquacious' which featured white musk, lemon peel, vanilla incense and bergamot arrived recently. I'm wearing it today and its quite nice on my skin. :)

I went to the yearly Knit and Spin weekend retreat a few weeks ago and had a nice time catching up with friends. I did a crochet class on Saturday, although trying to replicate what I did should be fun. XD

My local mall ten minutes away has been half rebuilt after a few years absence which is good. I've checked out the place and it shows promise. No supermarket quite yet which is something I really missed. We need a bookshop back too. *gets twitchy*   There's going to be a Lego store too. :)

Was pleased to hear that Archive of Our Own won a Hugo award for fanfic. So if you've got work published there, the Hugo is for you too. :D

June has started and with it, winter (brr). When the weather drops below 15 degrees (60 F), I don't like it at all. It's back to hats, scarfs and gloves.  At least today is a lovely fine day, though icy in the shade. Saturday was quite stormy, I was out and saw two different rainbows in the morning alone.

I'm planning to go to the 'Tolkien' movie with a friend when it comes out soon, it sounds good.

I went to a board gaming evening last week, one of the games we played was a fantasy-Victorian variation of Cluedo, great fun.

I've heard that 'Good Omens' came out last weekend; I don't get Amazon Prime so hopefully my local library will get the DVD version.  I recently rented the DVD of 'A Discovery of Witches', which was nice if slightly gorey (which I was expecting). It's set in Oxford so lots of lovely library pr0n. :D

When the night is clear, at the moment I can see the Orion constellation on its side in the west, while the Southern Cross is in the eastern sky. :)

We had daylight saving last week with the clocks turned back an hour. The mornings are lighter again, but the suddenly darker evenings always take some getting used to. My electric blanket is being used again and so is my scarfs.

So, new Star Wars trailer. Looks interesting! The title 'Rise of Skywalker' has been debated a lot and could refer to: a) The new title of Force users, b) A  new spaceship (Sir, the Skywalker is approaching! Run away!) or c) Angry at being fridged* in 'Attack of the Clones' the ghost of Shmi Skywalker is back for vengeance.

I recently saw and enjoyed the film 'Woman at War' which is (deep breath) an Icelandic eco-thriller comedy. Featuring a middle-aged Katniss Everdeen-type character in sensible jumpers with her bow and arrow. Lovely landscape. Subtitled of course.

*When a female character is killed to further the storyline of a man. I saw this in a book trilogy once, the main character was a woman - no, sorry, she has to go because the trilogy is really about a minor male character who turns up. I didn't read the third book.

Last Thursday was the autumn equinox and the morning started with a heavy, damp fog that had rolled in. Fortunately by late morning it had gone and it became a nice hot day. It's been like that ever since, although there is some stormy weather on the way later this week. Mornings and evenings are getting darker more quickly though.

I went to see 'Captain America' recently to cheer myself up and enjoyed it. It was set in the '90's and I liked how it poked gentle fun at '90's things such as video stores, boxy computers with stone age internet (and how long it takes to download stuff) and pagers.

A special thank you to my dissertation advisor
Who, when I told him what I wanted to write about,
Told me about his son’s last holiday abroad
And how his son had told him something interesting
Vaguely related
To my interests
And wouldn’t that be a more interesting topic to write about?

Happy Midsummer to those in the Southern Hemisphere (and Happy Midwinter to those up North). Summer got going here about a week ago and it's nice to be back in t-shirts.

My part time job doesn't need me back until the second week of January, so that's nice. I'm not going on holiday, but might do some local things like going to a beach for the day.

Christmas will be a low-key one with my folks.

Am looking forward to the upcoming fandom 'Snowflake Challenge'. I've been doing them for a few years now and it's always fun. For newbies, every day from January 1 - 15 there is a fandom question (i.e. name three favourite fan fictions you have written). You don't have to answer each question, though. There's Yuletide as well to look forward to. :D

Spring has taken a few steps backwards to winter as it’s become cold again and there’s snow in the South Island. Yesterday I was out and there was a freezing, gale-force sou’ wester that almost blew me over at times.  I reacted by eating a nice steam pudding by the heater last night. ::nods::

Last year I had gone to a knit-and-spin retreat held nearby for the first time, and a few weeks ago I went again. I had a nice time – the renovations being done last time had been finished and the place looked that much better.  We were given a ball of wool each (in blue or grey) and asked to create over the weekend a square 25 x 25 cm in any way, which would be part of a planned blanket for charity. I was given some grey wool (very nice wool, too) and I crocheted a square. We were all given a gift at the end of the retreat, and I got a big, multi-coloured ball of wool.  Now, what shall I do with it…

I’ve recently joined a book club that meets once a month in a café at a park. What’s good about this club is that they have a theme each month, and you bring along a book that relates to the theme, which opens up a lot of possibilities. Next month is ‘books that scared you’ and I’ll think I’ll bring along my copy of ‘The Mistletoe Bride and other Haunting Tales’ by Kate Mosse, which does have some genuinely creepy stories.

I was at the library recently and saw season 1 of the sci-fi TV show ‘The Expanse’ which I immediately grabbed and watched, as I only saw a few episodes on TV a while ago before the screening times starting jumping around. Grr. It’s based on a book series set in the solar system in the future, where a missing person sets off a chain of events. A hard-bitten cop and a ships crew both end up searching for her and *spoiler alert* there’s an amusing clash of personalities when they both team up to search together. I’ve heard the show has been renewed for season 4, so that’s promising.

Which Dysfunctional Space Crew Do You Belong In?

Firefly

Well aren't you just a perfect embodiment of chaotic good. You're clearly the just the kind of talented misfit that belongs on the crew of the Serenity. You may grouchily claim you're not a team player, but you'll find your family, and maybe a cause worth fighting for, when you join this space team.

Update

imhilien: Rainbow (Keep Calm)
It was a foggy late winter morning today, as in 'uh, should the fog be that close to the house?'. The first cherry trees to flower have done so, daffodils and magnolia trees are in bloom too.

My part-time secretarial job was made redundant recently, which I'm a bit sad about. I had my own small office with a door I could close when I wanted to. So after three years I'm job hunting again. I had a part-time job interview the other day, which seemed to go ok. *crosses fingers*

My mum had her birthday recently and we went a few hours south on the motorway to a tea plantation with a restaurant that serves lovely food. Afterwards we went to the city of Hamilton nearby and went to the museum that had a Jane Austen exhibition, where they had replica outfits that the characters in her novels would have worn. A few things were pointed out as genuine, such as a long pashmina-type shawl. Some very delicate genuine items were kept in glass cabinets, such as a white silk wedding dress. It did look very small though (maybe it had shrunk?) and I kept thinking 'how tall was she??'.
imhilien: Tea (Tea)
Brr, it's definitely winter now. Snow has been marching up the country and you can smell the ice in the air. It was 10 degrees today (50 deg F) and Did Not Like. Heat is fine, cold not so much for me.

I was outside the bookshop near work and smiled when I saw it had a nice geeky window display with Harry Potter and Star Wars books, bless. I saw there were some pencils with slogans on them, so I went in and bought two that said, 'Weird and Proud' and 'Knitters Gonna Knit'. Mwaha.

The new painting I'm working on is a photo of a still life of a bowl of green limes, which I'm enjoying doing. I'm also working on knitting a shawl with a geometric design - I can see it will take me a while, and the instructions look like calculus (which I never took), but I'm determined to get there.
