Well, I recently went on a knit ‘n spin retreat weekend with 17 others and had a nice time. It was held at a local two storey monastery that’s on a forested hill – you can drive right by the entrance and not know it was there.

It was being renovated at the time and some rooms and bathrooms were still being worked on. I had a room upstairs and the bathroom at the end of a long hall had that ‘finished a few days ago’ feel, but that was ok. I had my showers in the early morning and luckily there was no queue when I went. My room looked like it had been last updated in the ‘30’s but I had a nice view from the window.

There were classes you could sign up for over the weekend and I did two crochet classes; Tunisian Honeycomb (which I found a bit too complex) and filet style to (eventually) make a Dr Who scarf (with a Tardis pattern), which I enjoyed more. So, now as well as my shawl-in-progress, I’m now working on a scarf, too. Oops.

It was a wet weekend, so you didn’t feel too bad about being inside. The food was nice and you could help yourself to hot drinks. When it was dry and I had some spare time, I went for a little walk around the grounds. There were lots of nice old trees and I found a gate that led next door to the Pah Homestead. The PH was a Big House back in the day, today it’s an art gallery with a café. I walked around in the grounds and then went back.

Prizes were handed out to everyone at the end of the weekend – I was given a skein of pink wool and some earrings that were made to look like little balls of red wool, so that was nice. :)

Two of these retreats are held each year in our spring; apparently the one I went to was the ‘smaller’ one. I’m already thinking about going again next year.

Damn, I wish I'd known about those retreats when I still lived there!

Where was the venue? I think I once went to an ex-monastery in Hillsborough or near there for a day's course.
