White Island eruption

It's a sad time for New Zealand - White Island, the volcanic island off our north-east coast erupted yesterday afternoon while 47 tourists were on it.
Most got off, but five people died afterwards of their injuries. Eight people didn't escape and it sounds like it will be a retrieval mission, not a rescue one, unfortunately.
I remember having summer holidays at the nearby coastal town of Ohope; from the beach you could see White Island on the horizon, a thin column of smoke constantly rising from it. I was never tempted to go there and I feel sad that the island has again claimed lives. A century ago they tried to mine sulphur there I believe, which ended in tragedy.

I hope that eruption is not the harbinger of something worse to come.
