NZ Hell hole, I know it well! /s

So, according to an overseas critic, because New Zealand is in lockdown at the moment (strict in my city, not so strict elsewhere), we're a hell hole with a quarantine camp (whut?). Nope, nope. Those actually allowed in the country at the moment have to go into a two week quarantine period, often at a hotel. In fact, someone had complained they were being given too much 5-star cake at their hotel, which wasn't good for their waistline!

Naturally, NZ'ers are responding to this insult with sarcasm, which can be seen here: https://twitter.com/hashtag/NZhellhole?src=hashtag_click

My favourite comment is from someone saying their dog can't swim to freedom because the 'govt's tracker Orcas are everywhere'. LOL.

More meh

So, in unsurprising news, my city has extended the COVID lockdown for the next fortnight, then will review the situation. I don't think it's going to end any time soon.

I will try and support small business in this time, so in the next day or two, I'll put on a face mask, walk to a local cafe and buy something from their door to take home and eat.

Meh

So it had to happen... it's been around 100 days since the last case of community transmission of COVID in New Zealand, but yesterday it's been announced that a household in my city has four people with symptoms, caught from within the community. So for the next few days (hah! it will be longer), people are advised to stay home / work from home. Schools and libraries are closed from today, wear a mask and stay 2 metres from people when you're out, etc. Businesses can stay open if they can distance themselves from customers.

The rest of New Zealand has a slightly less strict lockdown, so that's ok. I made a batch of scones today to make me feel a bit better. I'm an introvert, so I don't mind being inside but I know some people will suffer.

One bright spot is the new season of Lucifer (part one) is dropping on Netflix in a week so that's something to look forward to.

Pics of the new normal

People have asked Star Wars star Mark Hamill for pandemic advice and he's said, "You know those places where people hang out? Don't go there."

Here is a link to pictures throughout New Zealand of eerily quiet cities and roads now that we're doing the self-isolation thing:

Went out

The number of people ill in New Zealand has risen to 39 (non fatal). Apparently they had been self-isolating after returning from abroad (it's still not appearing in the community yet, which is good).

The borders have been shut now to foreigners (first time ever).

Libraries, art galleries and museums will be closed after today. Apparently this is only for a fortnight, which will probably mean much longer. I'm glad I've got a good supply of library books and you can still get them online.

I went out to get some things today before I wouldn't be able to. I was good though and wore a face mask and goth looking black gloves inherited from an elderly relative after her passing years ago (it was in the discards pile after the good stuff had been taken, and I had thought why not?). I only saw one other white person wearing a mask - plenty of people from other cultures were wearing them.

I'm guessing that cinemas and malls might be the next to shut. It feels like being in a dystopian thriller right now...

Hope people are safe and coping where they are.
