Fandom Snowflake Challenge Day 2

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I live in the Southern hemisphere where Christmas = summer. I belong to a sci-fi club and a few weeks before Christmas, I went to a BBQ they put on at a local park. We had a Secret Santa and I received a Star Wars mug w/marshmallows. Yay! This turned out to be the best Christmas present I actually received this year, but that’s another story…

Oh dear, the other story doesn't sound so good, but your Secret Santa present is definitely awesome!

Your mug sounds awesome, as does your SciFi club!

That is so awesome.

I've written about the debate over whether to 'flip' holidays in the Southern Hemisphere to match the local seasons. My stance is that it depends on whether you feel a stronger affinity for a northern culture (don't flip), more for where you live (flip, or use local holidays), find the dissonance bothersome (flip) or amusing (don't flip).

>> I don't mind Christmas in summer, and Midwinter Christmas is a great idea Down Under. <<

We usually do Christmas in July over in [community profile] allbingo which is a lot of fun. It seems to be a popular concept.

>> But I feel that as a harvest festival Halloween should have been shifted to match our autumn - I really feel the dissonance when it's Halloween but there's spring flowers all around.<<

Yeah, I've heard people mention that the autumn/spring dissonance bothers them more than the winter/summer one. Maybe because things are changing so rapidly at the equinoxes, while the solstices are at the peak?

>> Thanks for friending me. :) <<

You're welcome! It's fun to meet new people.

I'm doing a Poetry Fishbowl in my blog today if you want to drop by and check it out. The theme is "Do you believe in magic?"
